Elmer Freeman Beck

Elmer Freeman Beck, 91, of Matawan, formerly of Highlands, passed away Monday, November 6th. at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Newark, NJ on June 1, 1926 to the late Freeman Beck and Amanda (Paulson) Beck. He lived in Newark, Manhattan and Astoria, NYC and Highlands, NJ with his parents and sister Ruth. Elmer graduated from Atlantic Highlands High School in 1944 and Monmouth Junior College in 1946. He worked at Atco Tile in Keyport until September of 1949. Elmer then returned to school at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA where he earned an Industrial Engineering degree in 1952. He also did post graduate studies at Newark College of Engineering. In the fall of 1952, Elmer met the love of his life on a blind date, a Matawan girl, Jeanette Eamello. They were married in May of 1953 in a small church on Main Street, which is now Bart's Italian Restaurant. They bought and still own a home in Matawan where they raised three children. Elmer is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Jeanette (nee: Eamello). Loving father of Wendy Smith, Glenn Beck and wife Joy and Gayle McTernan. Cherished grandfather of Andrew Bradley Smith, Amanda Lyn Smith, Adam Douglas Stash (Dipti), Patrick Freeman Beck, Sara Beck-Anton (Wayne) and Colin James McTernan, and great-grandfather of Jenna and Jake Stash. Caring brother of Ruth Anderson and cherished uncle of several nieces and nephews. Elmer enjoyed a many faceted engineering career at Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent Technologies Co. and retired in 1989 as a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ. Elmer was always an active member of the Matawan Community, enjoying such activities as; member and president of the Boro Planning Board, member of working boards of First Presbyterian Church, coaching youth basketball and managing many baseball teams in the three levels of the Matawan 8-15 Little League and Babe Ruth League, where he was particularly adept at turning talent into winning teams. One of his many hobbies was photography especially taking pictures of the family vacations. Elmer was an avid sports fan - following the NY Football Giants, NY Mets and the Rutgers Womens Basketball Team. Elmer and Jeanette would travel to and attend the women's final four basketball tournament games every year. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers over the last two years, especially Brenda and Melanie.
